Computer not working with monitor

When a Windows PC is powered on but will not work with the monitor — blank panel, not detected, or no usable image — treat it as a decision tree. Start with power and the video path, then branch. Do not jump straight to reseating parts or downloading “fix packs.”

Do not skip the first cut. Separate “PC on / monitor blank or not communicating” from “screen keeps turning off while you work” or “PC shuts down randomly.” Those are different problems. This site covers connectivity, detection, and blank display while the PC stays powered.

First cut: pick the matching branch

Fans and lights on; monitor dark or “no display” Start at PC on, no display, then power, cable, and port.
Windows runs on one screen; another never appears Use monitor not detected and external / second monitor.
Desktop with a discrete GPU; cable in motherboard ports Go to GPU vs motherboard video ports.
Laptop: built-in screen OK, external dead Use external monitor not working (includes dock / USB-C).
Was working; blank after sleep or a driver update Try input source and Win+P, then graphics driver reset.
Unsure if the PC or the monitor failed See the spare-test section below, then power / cable / port.

Ordered steps (start here)

  1. Confirm the PC has power

Look for case LEDs, fan spin, keyboard lights, or drive activity. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance also starts with power and a connected display.

Desktop PC case with power LED circled in red
Confirm power LEDs or fans before chasing video detection.
No power signs Leave this tree — troubleshoot PSU / wall power first (out of scope here).
Power signs present Continue to step 2.
  2. Confirm the monitor has power and the correct awake state

Check the monitor power LED, wall outlet or power brick, and that the panel is not in a deep standby that needs a button wake. Reseat the video cable at both ends (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or other — whatever you use).

Next: power, cable, and port checks

  3. Use the correct video output on the PC

On a desktop with a graphics card, plug into the GPU rear bracket — not the motherboard I/O video ports — unless you intentionally run integrated graphics only.

    Next: GPU vs motherboard ports

PC rear panel with arrow to GPU ports and red X on motherboard video ports
Discrete GPU systems usually need the cable in the graphics card outputs.
  4. Set monitor input, then cycle Win+P

On the monitor OSD, select the input that matches the port you used. On the PC, press Windows + P and try Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only.

    Next: input source and Win+P

  5. Ask Windows to Detect the display

Open Settings → System → Display. Under Multiple displays, select Detect. Use Identify if more than one display is listed.

Next: monitor not detected in Windows

  6. Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Wait for a beep or brief flicker. Microsoft documents this reset in external-monitor and blank-screen troubleshooting.

Next: graphics driver reset (includes Safe Mode steps)

Unsure whether the PC or the monitor failed?

Connect this monitor to a known-good laptop or another PC. If it stays blank there too, focus on the monitor power and panel. If the spare source works, keep troubleshooting this PC’s video path — ports, GPU seating, and drivers — starting at PC on, no display.

FAQ

Why is my PC on but the monitor is not working?

Typical causes: monitor asleep or unpowered, loose cable, wrong PC video port (motherboard vs GPU), wrong OSD input, Windows left on “PC screen only,” or a hung graphics driver. Walk the ordered steps above before replacing hardware.

Why is my computer not communicating with my monitor?

“Not communicating” usually means Windows never enumerates the display (Detect does nothing) or the panel never gets a valid video stream. Use not detected if you can still see Windows on another screen; use no display if every screen is blank.

How do I get my PC to recognize my monitor?

Secure the cable, pick the matching monitor input, press Win+P to Extend or Duplicate, then Settings → System → Display → Detect. Details: monitor not detected.

How do I fix an unresponsive monitor?

Power-cycle the monitor, try another cable and port, test the monitor on another PC, then return to this tree if the spare source works. Avoid “one-click” tools and random driver packs.
